There are so many fabulous and underrated restaurants in East Hampton. The town of East Hampton is refreshing and modern, more than any other town. New stores seem to shuffle in every summer, making it even more relevant than the last. It is in between Wainscott and Amangansett, and has been home to many well-known names over the years. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis grew up there, and was a member of the Maidstone Country Club. Bill and Hilary Clinton have famously vacationed in East Hampton, where they stayed on the beautiful Georgica Pond at the home of Steven Spielberg.
Home of the exclusive Further Lane and Lily Pond Lane, East Hampton has food purveyors facing a lot of expectations from very difficult customers. Luckily, the town of East Hampton and the little village in the middle of it rarely disappoints when it comes to a great meal. Many restaurants have come and gone, but only the great ones remain. Let’s begin with the 1770 House. This historic inn dates to 1663. In 1770, the space, originally William Fithian’s home, was converted into an inn. The inn is now more popular than ever, serving unbelievable dishes such as foie gras on brioche bread with vanilla and white bean ravioli with bacon. Can you say “yum”? The restaurant is known for its perfectly cooked fish, in addition to the melt-in-your-mouth braised short ribs. Not to mention the secret off-the-menu burger downstairs. Shhh.
The second honorable restaurant mention goes to The Palm. You may have heard of The Palm; it is a high-end steakhouse chain in New York. Many say that it is hard to get into the Palm in East Hampton. Little known secret? Slip Thomas at the door a big bill, and you won’t be waiting for long. (Update: Thomas retired. We miss him.) Once inside, the Monday Night Salad is a must order. It comes with chopped romaine, iceberg, tomato, onion, roasted pepper, radish, scallion and anchovies. And it doesn’t have to be Monday night for you to order it. Finish the meal off with an incredible steak, because after all, you are at a steakhouse!
Now we arrive at Nick and Toni’s. This isn’t just any Italian restaurant. Known for having the most coveted tables in the Hamptons, Nick and Toni’s is owned by Toni Ross and Mark Smith (who also own Townline BBQ, La Fondita and Rowdy Hall). Ross used to co-own with her husband Jeffrey Salaway, who we tragically lost in an accident in 2001. The place overseen by Bonnie Munshin, and if you don’t know Bonnie, well, you’re likely not getting in. Usually these exclusive places like to make it difficult for people, and then don’t even have great food to show for it. That’s not the case here. Nick and Toni’s will forever have my heart for their perfectly fried zucchini chips. My favorite pasta is the penne alla vecchia bettola, with spicy oven roasted tomato sauce that has just the right kick. You truly can’t go wrong with any of the dishes at Nick and Toni’s.
Let us not forget about The Living Room. In the historic Maidstone, a Swedish owned hotel, the Living Room is complete with amazing art covering the walls and incredibly attentive service. Going along with the Swedish vibe, any first timer must try the toast Skagen classic: creamy Swedish shrimp salad on toasted brioche. Afterwards, try their delicious arctic char and if you have enough room get the grilled rack of venison, served with autumn tomatoes, risotto croquets and an earthy red wine sauce.
Looking for something a little more casual but still scrumptious? Maybe a sandwich on the go? That’s where Luigi’s Italian Specialties comes into play. Their pizzas and Italian heros have been making people’s stomachs smile since 1996. Their sandwiches on foccacia bread are the best; my favorite is the proscuitto di darma, with fresh mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and basil.

Last but not least, my ultimate favorite, The East Hampton Grill. The service is phenomenal, and the Hillstone Group makes sure to use their best servers in the summer to ensure a satisfying experience. The food is impeccable. Truly nothing like this out east. I usually start with their heavenly biscuits: that’s actually what they are called, and yes, they are heavenly. But don’t miss out on their tuna tartare, which is prepared beautifully with freshly sliced avocado and a deviled egg. For the main course? Their barbecue ribs are nothing short of perfection, slowly cooked, and they fall right off the bone.
